Vincent Iacopino, MD, PhD

PHR Senior Medical Advisor

Vincent Iacopino, MD, PhD, is Senior Medical Advisor to Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), and holds the title of Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He has been involved in health and human rights investigations and research for over seventeen years. Dr. Iacopino has led medical investigations for PHR in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and North and South America, that have documented health and human rights violations and have made concrete recommendations for law and policy changes.

From 1991 through 1997, Dr. Iacopino served as the Medical Director for Survivors International (San Francisco, California) providing medical and psychological assistance to survivors of torture. He served as International Coordinator for a group of experts who designed and drafted the United Nations Manual on the Effective Documentation of Torture, also known as the “Istanbul Protocol”. He also has been a consultant to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, developing new ideas in the relationship between health and human rights.

In 2004, Dr. Iacopino received the Eclipse Award from the Center for Victims of Torture for extraordinary service providing care to the survivors of torture. He also has been a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
